Bottomland by Michelle Hoover is the 2017 All Iowa Reads (AIR) book. "At once intimate and sweeping, this story follows the Hess family in the years after World War I as they attempt to rid themselves of the anti-German sentiment that left a stain on their name. But when the youngest two daughters vanish in the middle of the night, the family must piece together what happened while struggling to maintain their life on the unforgiving Iowa plains" (Amazon). The State Library of Iowa's Center for the Book program has been selecting All Iowa Reads books each year since 2003. To learn more you can visit www.iowacenterforthebook.org/air. We conclude the 1960s portion of our Great Directors Series with Arthur Penn's 1967 classic, Bonnie and Clyde, starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway in the title roles. The film is based on the true story of criminal couple, Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker, who famously went on a violent crime spree during the Great Depression. "Bonnie and Clyde is a milestone in the history of American movies, a work of truth and brilliance. It is also pitilessly cruel, filled with sympathy, nauseating, funny, heartbreaking, and astonishingly beautiful" (Roger Ebert). It received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress. The movie will begin at 1:00 PM and light snacks will be served.
