Building Blunders” introduces children to the marvels of engineering and explores the role of failure as a tool to build even better things. Through hands-on demonstrations, children will learn about building blunders that topple, tilt or twirl – and what engineers can learn from those blunders.
The Science Center of Iowa’s Science @ Your Site outreach program brings fun, engaging experiments to schools and libraries across Iowa. This program highlights the importance of science learning and experimentation beyond the classroom and reflects SCI’s mission to engage and inspire Iowans along their journey of lifelong science learning.
The library will be open extended hours tonight for a special event for adults. Our Midsummer Celebration will be comprised of adult coloring and a puzzle contest. To participate in the puzzle contest pre-registration is required and space is limited. Please contact the library to register a team of up to four adults. There will be door prizes for both the coloring and puzzle contest that complement our summer reading theme, "Build a Better World." The puzzle contest will also feature prizes for our winners. We launch the 1960s portion of our Great Directors Film Series with The Hustler, starring Paul Newman as pool shark, Fast Eddie, and featuring Piper Laurie, Jackie Gleason, and George C. Scott in supporting roles. Directed by Robert Rossen, The Hustler is a gritty commentary on winning and losing, loyalty and greed, heartbreak and love. This 1961 film was nominated for nine academy awards, including best picture. It was Paul Newman's break into playing leading roles, and after a major critical and popular success, The Hustler quickly achieved the status of a modern classic. Our film starts at 1:00 PM and light snacks will be served.
Stop by the library and find out all about Habitat for Humanity in Buena Vista County. Organizational director, Misty Sanderson, will provide an overview of current projects and volunteer opportunities. There will also be an opportunity to visit with a family that has benefited from a Habitat home. This presentation is part of Build a Better World, this summer's collaborative summer library program, and is sponsored by the Friends of the Storm Lake Public Library. Light refreshments will be served.
Nature Tots with Katie Struss, the Buena Vista County Naturalist will be here to talk about cool nature themed topics! Nature Tots is the second Wednesday of the month and starts at 10:30am and goes to about 11:30am. This program is geared towards 2-4 year-olds but younger and older children are welcome to come with an adult. Katie will talk about salamanders, read a story, have a craft, and finish with a snack.
